Gregg Gillis @ Mojo’s Columbia Mo

Ah yes Girl Talk – aka Gregg Gillis…this was the second show I’ve seen of his in the last couple of months and it’s always a good time. You can check out the Girl Talk inteview here. A party just isn’t a party without the tangy zip of girl talk.
MoJo’s was a bit of a smaller venue than the last one I seen him in but it sold out and had a crowd of around 315 people packed in. The night was not short of drama from the get go. Gregg put us on the guest list but when we showed up MoJo’s didn’t have us down. So I called him up and he said he’d put me on as soon as he got there and if we had any problems to call him back – which was very cool of him. I felt bad having to call him but he’s so laid back I don’t think he cared.
But the good folks at MoJo’s decided even if he said we could get in they weren’t going to let us! I called bullshit on it and walked off to call Gregg – long story short we ended up getting in after about an hour or so but it was worth the wait. They were just trying to do their jobs but we were legit and on the list. It was $2 PBR night – which honestly shouldn’t that be the cost of it every night? Deathset opened up for Girl Talk – they were kind of a noise band / altertive rock band. I wasn’t really diggin the music. Finally around 9:30 or so Girl Talk took the stage. Gregg always puts on a high energy show and crowd walks away happy. After a few vodka red bulls and PBR’s later random girls started their grind sessions on random strangers and the party / concert was in full force.
(listen closely for “Tim Canton ya a’ight?”)
After about 30 mins into the show my friend Derek and I moved our way closer and closer to the front – I eventually hopped on stage to rock out for about 30 mins. At this point it was a sweatfest. Before I knew it there was a blonde (we’ll call her Brit S.) using me as a stripper pole. Pretty amazing what energy drinks and alcohol can do! I wasn’t complaining just sayin – anyway back to the festivities.
When I hopped off stage I was greeted by a group of people yelling “KC Canton!” It was the U.S.S. Wildcats. Who the hell are they? Don’t get your panties in a bunch – they are a group of friends that travel around at Gregg’s shows and dress up in uniforms (matching t-shirts, headbands, and glowsticks) all in good fun – they seem like a rad bunch of cats (ally is hot). Much to my suprise they knew me from MySpace and they weren’t the only ones. A couple other people who I had never met also called out my name. The world wide web is wild sometimes.
The night was starting to wind down and I talked to Gregg on the way out thanked him for an awesome show and Derek and I went to find some food or drinks. That led us to the “Biker Bar” where it was Kareokee NIght! We watched a few people make asses of themselves because that’s what we all do when we participate in Kareokee. On the way there we noticed an entire street blocked off by cops and about 10 cop cars surrounding the area – it was like a Real World episode broke out or something.
Anyway Gregg is really down to earth fella that is just like you or me. In fact after the show he went to the after party and actually played at a girls house for her birthday – at this point it was around 1:30 in the morning and he had a show the next day in St. Louis.
I called it a night and crashed at my friends apartment. The very next day at his show in St. Louis a drunk naked fan got tazed and they shut the show down 20 minutes prematurely. But in true Girl Talk fashion he played an extra hour in the basement of a frat house to make it up to the fans.
